We Are Not Standing On Earth. We Are Part Of It.
A personal reflection on nature, responsibility, stewardship and the future of human civilisation.

“The Earth does not belong to us in the way a possession belongs to an owner. We belong to a living system upon which every breath, every economy and every generation depends.”
A Thought That Has Stayed With Me
The older I become, the more I find myself returning to lessons that were never taught in a boardroom, a university lecture hall or a financial report.
Some of the most enduring lessons came from conversations with my father, my grandfather and my grandmother — people from generations that lived closer to the rhythms of land, weather, food, scarcity, community and consequence. They may not have used the modern vocabulary of climate systems, biodiversity, sustainability or planetary boundaries. But they understood something fundamental: if you take from the land, you must respect what sustains it. If you waste what nature provides, one day nature will stop providing it in the way you have become accustomed to.
After more than five decades of living, observing, reading, travelling, building businesses and watching the world change, I have come to believe that this old wisdom deserves to be heard again — not as nostalgia, but as a principle of survival.
We often say that we live “on” Earth. I increasingly think that this language is part of the problem. We do not merely live on this planet. We live within its systems. Its atmosphere becomes the air in our lungs. Its water becomes our blood. Its soil becomes our food. Its forests influence the climate in which our economies operate. The distinction between humanity and nature is far smaller than modern civilisation sometimes pretends.
Gaia: A Powerful Idea — But One We Should Describe Carefully
In the 1960s and 1970s, British scientist James Lovelock developed what became known as the Gaia hypothesis, later advanced with microbiologist Lynn Margulis. Its central insight was not that Earth is literally a conscious organism with intentions, but that living organisms and the non-living environment interact through feedback processes capable of influencing conditions that support life.
The idea was controversial, particularly when it appeared to imply that the planet deliberately regulates itself. Modern Earth-system science does not require us to believe that Earth thinks, chooses or possesses consciousness. Yet the broader insight — that the atmosphere, oceans, soils, rocks and biosphere are deeply interconnected — has become impossible to ignore.
Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. Across that immense span it has undergone extraordinary geological and biological change, including mass extinctions, asteroid impacts, volcanic upheaval, major shifts in atmospheric chemistry and profound changes in climate. Life has repeatedly adapted, diversified and reorganised.
That history should humble us. It does not prove that every disaster is the planet “punishing” humanity. Nature has no need for revenge. But it does demonstrate that Earth systems respond to physical pressures, and those responses are indifferent to our politics, our quarterly earnings, our national borders and our personal beliefs.
The Planet Is Not Asking for Our Belief
This is where the discussion becomes uncomfortable.
For roughly two centuries, industrial civilisation has extracted resources at a scale previous generations could scarcely have imagined. We have burned immense quantities of fossil fuels, cleared forests, transformed landscapes, mined mountains, altered rivers, depleted habitats and filled air, land and water with forms of waste that natural systems cannot always absorb at the speed we produce them.
The scientific evidence is now clear on one central point: human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has concluded that human activities — principally greenhouse-gas emissions — have unequivocally caused global warming, while humancaused climate change is already affecting weather and climate extremes in every region of the world.
That does not mean every flood, drought, wildfire, storm or landslide can be attributed solely to human activity. Earth has always experienced natural hazards and climate variability. Responsible discussion requires that distinction. What the evidence does tell us is that human activity is changing the background conditions within which many hazards occur — altering probabilities, intensities, exposure and vulnerability.
Nature does not need our agreement before physics takes effect.
We Mistook Extraction for Ownership
Somewhere in the development of modern civilisation, we began to confuse legal ownership with absolute entitlement.
A title deed may say a person owns a piece of land. A concession may permit a company to extract minerals. A licence may authorise logging, drilling or development. But no legal document can repeal ecology. No corporate resolution can manufacture a replacement rainforest in a generation. No balance sheet can restore an extinct species. No government decree can order a depleted aquifer to refill tomorrow.
We have become exceptionally skilled at calculating the commercial value of extraction while often failing to price the cost of depletion.
Oil becomes revenue. Timber becomes revenue. Minerals become revenue. Land conversion becomes revenue. Yet the loss of ecological resilience is frequently treated as an externality — somebody else’s problem, some future government’s liability, some unborn generation’s expense.
This is not merely an environmental problem. It is a governance problem.
Those entrusted with authority — governments, corporations, investors, institutions and leaders — carry a responsibility that extends beyond what can legally be taken today. Good governance must also ask what should be preserved for tomorrow.
The Earth Will Probably Outlive Us
One of the most important distinctions in this conversation is this: protecting the environment is not primarily about “saving the planet.”
Earth has endured conditions far more extreme than anything human civilisation has experienced. In deep time, even oxygen — indispensable to us today — accumulated through biological processes that transformed the planet and were catastrophic for many organisms adapted to the earlier environment.
Earth will continue to change. Life, in some form, may prove remarkably persistent.
The fragile component is human civilisation as we know it: our coastal cities, agricultural systems, supply chains, infrastructure, food security, political stability and the narrow climatic conditions within which billions of people have built their lives.
The more useful question, therefore, is not whether Earth can survive humanity.
It is whether humanity can preserve the conditions under which humanity can flourish.
A Lesson From the Elders: Take What You Need, Not Everything You Can
When I think about my elders, I am struck by how often restraint was embedded in ordinary life.
Things were repaired rather than immediately replaced. Food was respected because people understood the labour required to produce it. Water was not treated as infinitely available. Land was associated with inheritance and continuity, not merely transaction. Waste carried a sense of shame that modern consumer culture has gradually normalised away.
Of course, earlier generations were not environmentally perfect, and poverty should never be romanticised. Modern development has delivered extraordinary gains in health, mobility, technology, education and human opportunity. The answer is not to reverse civilisation.
The challenge is to mature it.
Progress should mean becoming intelligent enough to improve human life without systematically degrading the systems that make human life possible.
From Ownership to Stewardship
Perhaps the most important change required is philosophical before it is technological.
We need to move from a culture of ownership to a culture of stewardship.
Stewardship does not mean rejecting business, investment, infrastructure, energy or development. I have spent much of my life in and around business, capital, governance and institutional structures. I understand that societies require economic growth and that billions of people legitimately aspire to better standards of living.
But growth without governance eventually becomes extraction. Extraction without limits becomes depletion. And depletion without accountability becomes an intergenerational liability.
The same principles we apply to responsible institutions should apply to our relationship with the planet: understand the asset, identify the risks, recognise the stakeholders, establish limits, measure consequences, create accountability and protect long-term value.
If a board of directors knowingly consumed the productive assets of a company while leaving its liabilities to future shareholders, we would call that poor governance. Yet humanity can behave in precisely this way with natural capital and still call the result development.
Every Living Being Matters — But Human Responsibility Is Different
Every species participates in the web of life. But human beings occupy a unique position because our technological power allows us to alter ecosystems at planetary scale.
That capacity creates responsibility.
A tiger does not design an energy policy. A whale does not approve a mining concession. A forest does not determine an industrial emissions standard. These are human decisions, made by people and institutions with authority.
For that reason, responsibility cannot be diluted into the comforting phrase that “everyone is equally responsible.” We all have a role, certainly. But those with greater power, capital, influence and decisionmaking authority carry a correspondingly greater duty of care.
Leadership must mean more than managing the next quarter, election cycle or transaction. It must include the courage to consider people we will never meet — those who may live 100, 1,000 or even many thousands of years from now.
What Would Responsible Coexistence Look Like?
It would begin with a few commitments that are neither radical nor partisan:
Treat natural capital as real capital. Forests, soils, rivers, oceans and biodiversity are not decorative assets. They are infrastructure for civilisation.
Demand long-term accountability from institutions. Major projects should be judged not only by immediate economic return, but by environmental, social and intergenerational consequences.
Use science without turning science into ideology. Evidence should guide decisions, while uncertainty should be communicated honestly rather than weaponised by either side of a debate.
Reward restoration, efficiency and circularity. The next generation of enterprise should create value by reducing waste, restoring ecosystems, improving resource productivity and designing products for longer useful lives.
Respect local and ancestral knowledge. Technology is indispensable, but generations that lived close to land and seasons often retained practical wisdom about restraint, resilience and continuity.
Measure progress more intelligently. GDP and corporate profit tell us something important, but they do not tell us whether soil is dying, water is disappearing, ecosystems are collapsing or communities are becoming less resilient.
Accept that stewardship is personal. Governments and corporations matter enormously, but so do consumption, waste, voting, investment, education and the values we pass to our children.
The Message I Hear From Nature
I do not believe Mother Nature literally speaks to us. But I do believe that if we are willing to observe carefully, the message contained in the evidence is increasingly difficult to misunderstand.
The message is not that humanity must disappear.
It is that humanity must grow up.
We have intelligence, science, engineering, finance, law, governance and technology of extraordinary sophistication. The tragedy would be to possess all of these tools and still lack the wisdom to use them in service of continuity.
We should not aspire merely to leave our children more wealth. We should aspire to leave them a world in which wealth still has meaning — where clean water is available, food systems remain viable, cities remain habitable, forests still stand, oceans still sustain life and economic opportunity does not depend upon ecological bankruptcy.
Perhaps that is the deeper lesson my elders were trying to teach, long before I had the experience to understand it: inheritance is not simply what we receive. It is what we preserve, improve and pass forward.
My Conclusion
Humanity is not the owner of Earth. At best, each generation is its temporary custodian.
We arrived here very recently in planetary time, yet we have acquired the power to influence systems billions of years in the making. That should not make us feel powerful. It should make us feel responsible.
If human civilisation is to endure for another thousand years — let alone another million — coexistence cannot remain an environmental slogan. It must become an operating principle for governments, corporations, investors, communities and individuals. We cannot endlessly poison water and expect healthy societies.
We cannot remove forests indefinitely and assume climate, rainfall and biodiversity will remain unchanged. We cannot degrade soil and expect food security to be somebody else’s problem. We cannot treat finite resources as though the future has no claim upon them.
We are not separate from nature.
We are one expression of it.
And perhaps the most consequential decision our generation will make is whether we continue behaving like conquerors of a planet we never created — or finally learn to behave like responsible custodians of the only home we have.
“The planet does not require our permission to change. Our responsibility is to ensure that the changes we cause do not make civilisation itself the casualty.”
